Upper Mustang Trekking takes you into a recently forbidden kingdom, now open to limited trekkers. This unique region lies north of the main Himalayan chain, bordered by snow-capped mountains and Tibet. Upper Mustang Trekking offers a journey through a high-altitude desert with passes above 4600m. Villages dot the valleys between 3300m and 4000m. The Upper Mustang Trekking route reveals important historical sites, including an 800-year-old cave with religious carvings. Once a crucial salt trading post in the Trans-Himalayan belt, Upper Mustang Trekking allows you to follow ancient yak caravan routes. The trek typically ends in Kagbeni, from where you return to Jomsom for a flight back to Pokhara
Permits & Regulations
All trekkers heading into Upper Mustang (north of Kagbeni) are required to purchase a $500 per person permit, which is valid for 10 days. You can stay longer, but every day after that will cost $50. At Kagbeni, you’ll be required to show your permit both on the way and the way out. In addition to the restricted permit, you’ll also need to purchase an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which is $20 USD per person.
